We aren’t rookies at this any longer but……..

…….stuff still happens. I’ll start with the onset of our trip down to Hilton Head. After last years travails getting the 5th wheel from the lake we decided to store it over the winter at a much more accessible place. It was only about 25 minutes from home and allowed us to make a few trips before leaving to load up. We will be storing it here moving forward. We planned the first stay at Ricketts Glen State Park in Pennsylvania. It had full hook ups and allowed us time to do the first major cleaning and dewinterizing. It was a fairly easy drive and we got in around 4.

The next day saw us on the road to Emporia, Virginia. This was a longer driving day than was originally planned, some bad traffic and a couple navigation issues added to the day. The event of the day was something that reminded me instantly of “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” when the guy pulls up alongside Steve Martin and John Candy and says “you’re going the wrong way”. We had just made one of our navigational guffaws and had to make a turnaround in some church parking lot. Once back on the highway we are cruising along and some guy pulls up beside us and starts flapping his arms and pointing. I am like ‘what’s his problem’…then I see in the passenger mirror the door to pass through storage is flapping! YIKES!!! There is all kinds of stuff in their…golf clubs, Weber BBQ, chairs, folding table, tool box, all the electrical and water hook up stuff….you get the picture…and we are travelling down the highway at 100km/hr. There is no immediate place to pull over and I am thinking if anything starts coming out we and the cars around us are in serious trouble. I start to slow down and luckily there is an exit about 2km away. We made it safely to the exit with spewing stuff all over the highway and got the door properly latched. Phewww! We figured the door hadn’t been closed all the way when it was latched.

The next morning we were on our last leg to HH and pulled in around 2 and got set up for our 21 day stay.

We have now played 7 games of golf and spent a couple days in Charleston. When we were planning the trip I saw that a band I have wanted to see for some time, Social Distortion, was playing at the Firefly Distillery in Charleston. We planned our visit around this and it was a great couple days. We went to Fort Sumter where the Civil War began. It was a Union held island fort in Charleston Harbor. When Lincoln won the presidency several southern states seceded from the United States and formed the confederacy, including South Carolina. The war started with the confederates firing on Fort Sumter and overtaking the fort.

We also visited the Old Slave Mart Museum which gave many insights to the slave trade and the history of slavery in the States as well as global involvement.

Today took a lovely bike ride through the Harbour Town area.

Next up is a day trip to Savannah
