After making a run to drop off a bunch of stuff and get a run through on operating the solar set up a few days earlier we headed to Perth to pick up the rig and head out. A minor hiccup with the map and we were on our way.
We pull up to the US customs agent and all seems fine and then he asks “Have the truck registration” I reply “Sure” and then Di and I rummage through where we think it should be and don’t come up with it. sheepish grin to the agent and ask if a pic on Di’s phone will do. A puzzled look in return but says ok. Phew…didn’t really want to turn back.
Di had tried to renew online the previous week but couldn’t – the truck is too big and still needs to be renewed at an office and you get a sticker. She had a pic of the registration as I was out and about while she was trying to renew online and asked for a pic of the existing registration. I ended up going into the office and getting it done but clearly left the document and sticker at home. Oh well here’s hoping we don’t get pulled over in the next 5 weeks 😊
After that things went swimmingly and we landed in Jonestown, PA around 5:30. A lot of cleaning and organizing over the rest of the evening and the next morning and we are now set for the rest of the trip.
I have mentioned in previous blogs that we have met some super nice folks while doing this and had another terrific encounter on Wednesday. A couple in a Motorhome pulled in beside us in the afternoon, they are from Quebec and are returning after 6 months in Florida. Jean Francois and I chatted for a few minutes when they pulled in and I was outside putzing around. A couple hours later a knock on the door and Jean Francois hands me two bottles of wine that they aren’t taking back. I am quite touched by this and I offer to pay and ask if there is anything I can do I can do…he just says “no, not at all…maybe you will do the same at some point for someone”. I most definitely will play this forward. On to Raleigh.
Well what a travel day getting to Raleigh…9 ½ hours…the traffic on I95 was crazy…it basically took us over 2 hours longer than planned. We got to Raleigh, got set up…had dinner and crashed.
We had a lazy start to our first full day in Raleigh, nice to chill a bit after the previous day’s journey. We went into Raleigh mid afternoon and hit the History of North Carolina Museum. It was a great museum, very well laid out. We then hit the local farmers market and then headed to The Angus Barn for a predinner drink, catch a bit of the Masters and then dinner. This place was recommended by a friend, thanks Barry! and featured in “to do’s” in Raleigh. The meal was fantastic and the place is legendary…it was quite the experience! It rained all night and most of Saturday so we didn’t get up to much. Heading to Hilton Head on Sunday for a week of golf and watching the final round of the Masters.
