Well day one is in the books and what a start. First let’s rewind a little…Di and I had volunteered at the CP Womens Open held at our golf club the week leading up to our departure and that was a little more tiring than we had expected. We essentially left straight from the golf course on Sunday to Bennett where we had parked the 5th wheel from the time we got it. Di has been doing a masterful job at all the day to day detail stuff while I have been responsible for ensuring operationally I know what the heck to do and all is working. Outside of a minor glitch in getting the fridge to work – wow are they sensitive to levelling 😄 – things went rather smoothly. Our condo was a drop centre for The Bay, Canadian Tire and Bed, Bath and Beyond. I must admit a number of times I was going “ good idea” at the same time thinking I wouldn’t have thought of that…but hey that’s why you divvy responsibility by strength. If it was left to me we would be running to the store every other day after we left to get some pretty basic stuff.
After we finish up at the golf tournament we head up to the lake the Sunday with a bunch of stuff packed and we are bringing out bikes. The bike rack we have had for a very long time and not used in a while was missing a part…I jerry rigged a replacement part I got from MEC and get the bikes on there to take them up…I do a couple checks on the way to Perth and all is good…low and behold we get to Bennett and when I get out of the truck and go to the back…my bike is gone😳. Holy crap…I start to drive back and about 100 yds from the entrance at Bennett my bike was off the side of the road with a ripped seat and flat front tire….my jerry rigging had failed and part of the rack was missing…actually not too bad considering. I get it on the truck and figure I need a little more fixing of the rack if its going to make the 3 1/2 week trip with our bikes in tact. This time I got it nailed and it survived the trip to Cape Cod.
Getting out the first morning was both exciting and a little anxious. Ken guided us out the first bit so we didnt run into anyone…thanks Ken!
The trip to our first overnight went ok…there is some getting used to hauling this rig. We did run into one slow down on our first leg…I hadn’t taken the time to load the proper maps into the RV GPS we are using and tried to wing a route to Gananoque…..not smart…..We got about 25 km from Perth and had to turn back as we came to a bridge that said Max. 5 tonnes…ooops. Got back on track and eventually made our way to Ganaonque, crossed the border with no issues and made it to our overnight stop around 5. Set up went flawlessly…phewww…glass of wine and Di’s great Mexican quinoa was a great end to a rather trying day. Tomorrow off to the Cape.
