Diane: And We’re Off

August 29, 2022

Good news. E did a great job driving, and we successfully arrived at our first stop—Arrowhead Marina & RV Park in Glenville, New York—late in the afternoon. Unhitching the RV went smoothly, and all appliances, air conditioning and water heating systems started as expected. We were toasting our first day quickly.

First night toast

We started out this morning with a guided escort by Ken Gillespie (thanks Ken!). He led us out Dokken Road, making sure that any incoming vehicles moved to the side so we could pass.

We had a few a minor hiccups along the way, mostly related to navigation. We’re using a GPS app (CoPilot GPS) specifically designed for travelling with an RV. Google Maps doesn’t offer important options for avoiding routes with low-clearance bridges or propane-restricted tunnels. 😊 Twenty minutes into our trip, E started to download the maps to the app. Umm….2.5 GBs of North American maps takes some time to download. So, while we were waiting, I set our route using Google Maps, and sure enough, not 15 minutes later we came to a bridge that wouldn’t support our vehicle weight. E is quickly learning to keep an ongoing eye out for potential turn-around locations.

This first night is just a stopover as we head to Cape Cod. The New York Schenectady area is beautiful with rivers, lakes and rolling hills, and is a popular area for biking and paddling.

Funny sidebar! Before ending today, I’m going to back up one day and share an incident that is too funny not to pass on. We headed to the lake on Sunday so that we could do some final prep so that we could head out first thing this morning. We brought our last set of supplies, along with some groceries and the bikes. When we arrived, E parked the truck and got out. As I was gathering my things, I heard him say very loudly and emphatically: “ohmygod”. Before I could fully envision some disaster with the RV, he followed with: “My bike is gone”. Somewhere along Dokken Road, we must have hit a bump and off went the bike. (As I write this, I’m laughing so hard that I need to stop and wipe my eyes. I’m not heartless. I know he hates the bike and would have been quite happy if it had been completely destroyed.) E did find the bike, but it was in much, much worse condition than when we left home. The front tire is completely blown, and the seat is shredded. It seems I’ll be riding solo until he can find a bike repair shop.

Stay posted, Diane
