Diane: The Backstory

I thought it would be useful to recap what brought us to our 5th Wheel Adventure.

A few years into our relationship, probably over a nice glass of wine, E suggested hitting the road on an extended vacation, pulling some kind of mobile-living accommodation. At the time, I assumed it was just fanciful musing on his part. I was wrong.

Fast forward a few years, and E suggest a trip out east with a trailer. Hmmm. I had to think about that for awhile, but despite some reservations on my part, away we went.

The trip was great. The living arrangements were problematic. We rented a 20-foot tin box and pulled it with a Hyundai Veracruz that was never meant to tow anything. Most of you have heard the stories at various dinner parties, once enough time passed for us (me) to see the humour in some of the events, including the faulty fridge (warm Chardonnay), the faulty overhead cabinet door (liquid dish soap everywhere), and the ant infestation (ant traps take two weeks to take effect).

Once home, I was happy with the memories of the good parts of the trip: beautiful golf courses, time with friends, and loads of great seafood. I breathed a sigh of relief that we had checked the mobile home adventure off E’s bucket list.

Wrong again.

As we approached retirement, E started talking about extended vacations on the road again. Stunned, I noted that we had done this type of trip already. Apparently, he viewed that trip as a ‘trial run’, when we ‘learned many things’. Moving forward, he said, we will ‘do it right’.

So here we are, ready to hit the road again. Kudos to E, as ‘doing it right’ involves a serious upgrade in the travel unit. We’re in a 36-foot Fifth Wheel, the equivalent of a one-bedroom condo. We have a fireplace, kitchen island, separate bedroom with a queen bed, and a walk-in closet. Whatever lies ahead, we will have comfortable living accommodations.

Stay posted, Diane

Ready to go
